Christmas in Minami Sanriku!

With the onset of winter in earnest, the temperatures in this part of the Tohoku region have begun to drop below freezing. The tsunami victims have all been moved from shelters to temporary housing units, but this has brought new issues to the fore. Aside from the obvious discomfort of living in cramped, badly insulated prefabs, mental and emotional stress has become a bigger problem. The aged and infirm have difficulty getting around, and there are little or no services left in the town. The once tight knit communities have been scattered, as the relocation process didn’t generally take into account the victims’ original place of residence. The colder it gets, the less inclined people are to go out of doors. There are already reports of elderly victims dying alone and forgotten, and mental illness is on the rise.

本格的な冬の到来によって、東北のこの地域は氷点下になりました。被災者の方々は、避難所から仮設住宅に引っ越しましたが、新たな問題が生じています。せまく、断熱効果の弱いプレハブという住みにくい状況の上に、精神的、情緒的ストレスが問題となりつつあります。高齢者や病人の人達の生活にも支障がでています。町には彼らの生活に役立つようなサービスはほとんどありません。被災者の移転に際してし、以前居住していた場所は考慮されないので、かつて固いきずなのあったコミュニティが分散されてしまいました。寒くなればなるほど、外に出なくなります。すでに、高齢者の被災者で、人から忘れられて孤独死するという報告がなされ、精神疾患も増えています。

To address some of these needs, we have started a project of organizing community events for different municipalities where the temporary housing units have been built. The first was held on December 18^that Numata Municipality in Minamisanrikucho. Volunteers came from all over the country came to help out, and Christmas was in the air!

こういったニーズに応えるために、私たちは、仮設住宅のある自治体で、イベントを主催するプロジェクトを始めました。最初のイベントは、12月18日に三陸町の志津川沼田自治体で行なわれました。全国からボランティアが集まり、クリスマスの雰囲気を楽しめました。

After a slightly harrowing drive through snowy mountains in the wee hours of the morning, our team arrived and the fun began.

早朝、雪の積もった山の間を運転して、私たちのチームは到着し、皆で楽しむ時をもつことができました。

Shimonaka san came all the way from Hyogo prefecture, along with other members of Rainbow Hearts from Saitama and Chiba, to serve hot meals to all those who attended the event.

埼玉県、千葉県のレインボー・ハーツのメンバーと共に、遠い所兵庫県からも下中さんがやって来て、そのイベントに参加した方々のために温かい食事をふるまってくれました。

Mike Kawashima dressed as a clown made balloons for kids (and some childish adults) for hours, which was quite the hit.

マイク・カワシマさんがピエロさんになって、子供達に（また子供心をもつ大人のためにも）バルーンの動物を作ってくれました。受けがとても良く、何時間も続きました。

And the highlight of course was Santa Claus with sponsored gifts for everyone!

そして喜んでもらえたのは、もちろんサンタさんが、スポンサーから提供されたプレゼントを皆さんに配ったことです。

We were also able to give out nearly 100 Mottos for Successcalendars that were sent by Activated Ministries as Christmas gifts. This is Florence with Mr. Watanabe, the caretaker of the building that we used for the event.

またアクティベート・ミニストリーからプレゼントされた100冊の「成功の鍵」カレンダーを受け取っていただくことができました。フローレンスと渡辺さんです。渡辺さんは、イベントのために使わせていただいた建物を管理してくださっています。

He later explained to us that the victims have difficulty organizing events for themselves, as they have been resettled here from places all over the city and hardly know their own neighbors. As one of the original residents of this neighborhood, he and a few others had been trying to help them to rebuild their community, and they were so happy that we had organized this Christmas event for that purpose.

被災者の方々は、町のいろいろな所からここへ引っ越して来られたので、お互いをよく知りません。それで彼らから率先してイベントを開くことは難しいことを、渡辺さんは後で説明してくださいました。最初からここに居住している彼や他の数少ない人達は、共に、コミュニティを築こうと努力して来られたので、その目的のために私たちがクリスマスのイベントを開いたのをとても喜んでくださいました。

Minamisanriku Trip Update

We’ve been continuing to make trips to Minamisanrikucho to help with the distribution of aid to needy families. Nine months after the tsunami, and the town still looks like this:

引き続き南三陸町へ行って、支援を必要とする家族に物資を配給するお手伝いをさせていただいています。津波が起こった9ヶ月後の町の様子です。

Here are some pictures from November 27^th- 30^th. Four of us went to help with the delivery of 5 truckloads of supplies to Sakana no Miura supply base that we’ve been working out of for the past months.

11月27日から30日のトリップの写真です。4人で、「魚の三浦さん」の配給ベースに送られて来たトラック5台分の物資を配る手伝いをしました。

Happenings as of December, 2011

Please forgive the sudden silence on this blog. The good news is that it wasnt because of a lack of action. ブログにしばらくアップデートがなかったことをお詫びします。しかし活動は引き続き進めておりました。

During August through October we made 10 trips to Tohoku delivering & distributing relief supplies. 8月から10月までの期間、東北地域へ10回の訪問をし、救援物資を配達、配給しました。

In August we helped with the distribution of more than 850 electric fans to the temporary housing units. 8月には、850個以上の扇風機を仮設住宅に届けることができました。

In late September we helped Sakana no Miura with the opening of his fish store in a new location, a big step forward for the community, as only a handful of businesses have been able to start up again since the disaster. 9月末には、「さかなのみうらさん」が新しい場所で魚屋をオープンするのをお手伝いました。災害以来、営業を再開できた店の数はわずかなので、コミュニティーにとってはまた前進の一歩です。

Beginning in October was the delivery of heaters and kotatsu in preparation for the cold winter months that are now very nearly upon us. 10月の始め、寒い季節を前に、冬の準備としてヒーターやこたつを配給することができました。

The needs of the people in Minamisanriku have been changing with each stage of recovery, & we are continuing to look into the best ways to provide needed support. 南三陸の町民のニーズは、復興がなされるにつれて変わってきているので、私たちもそれに合わせて、いつも最善の形で必要なサポートができるように調べ検討しています。

On November 23rd, 5 volunteers made the drive up to Minamisanriku. 11月23日、5人のボランティアが南三陸町に行きました。

We sorted, prepared & distributed aid to 118 housholds living in temporary housing units spread throughout the town. 物資を分類、準備して、町のあちこちにある仮設住宅118軒に配給しました。

6 trips from Chiba to Minamisanriku-cho with supplies, volunteers, and musicians; more than 10,000 kilometers driven!

皆さん、以下は７月２日から２６日までの報告です。

千葉から南三陸町に向けて物資を積み、ボランティアの方々、ミュージッシャンと共に６回の訪問を行いました。合計10、000キロ以上の旅です！

三浦さんと「よみがえれ三陸」プロジェクトと共に、30台以上の数のバンやトラックを使って、物資の配達を１５回行ないました。

バンドエイドとミアは、4ヶ月たった今も避難所で暮らしている方々へ音楽のプレゼントをしました。

「成功の鍵」カレンダー、「世界を変えよう」マンガ・ブック、バンドエイドとミアのオリジナルＣＤなどを多数プレゼントしました。スポンサーしてくださった方々に心からお礼を申し上げます。

Fukushima music relief: Bandaid! 福島で音楽による応援活動：バンドエイド！

June 29th - July 1st ６月２９日から７月１日まで

On this leg of the “Music Relief” aspect of our relief mission, six of us visited 6 evacuation centers and 2 old folks' homes in the Fukushima area. 救援ミッションを、音楽で応援するために、６人が福島県にある６つの避難センターと２つの老人ホームを訪問させていただきました。

Our band: Mike Marrington, Yoichi Nobuka, Gene Kato, and Florence McNair, and our managers: Takuji and Eiko Tadaura (taking the photo) バンドメンバーです：　マイク・マリングトン、延賀陽一、加藤仁、フローレンス・マックネア。そしてマネージャーの只浦卓二さんと栄子さん。（えいこさんはカメラの後ろにいます。）

Among these places that we visted, was the Fukushima Big Palette in Koriyama. This was our 3^rd visit. We discovered that many of the evacuees have been moved to temporary housing, but still many of our friends were there to hear our show. 訪問した場所のひとつは、郡山市にある「ビッグパレットふくしま」です。ここを訪問するのは３度目です。以前そこにいた多くの人達はすでに仮住宅に引っ越したので、いませんでしたが、私たちがお友達になった人もまだたくさんそこに住んでいて、バンドの演奏を聞いてくださいました。

Also, the JICA headquarters in Nihonmatsu city, where we were welcomed by many of our friends who we met the last time we came. They were happy to hear the new songs that we performed with our full band, and many sang along with the songs that they were familiar with from the CDs that we had left them last time. (Which made us VERY happy!) また二本松市にある「ＪＩＣＡ二本松」も訪問しました。先回訪問した時には、とても歓迎され、多くの方々とお友達になりました。今回、バンドメンバー全員を連れて来て、先回歌わなかった歌を歌ったので喜んでいただきました。また歌った多くの曲は、先回私たちがプレゼントしたＣＤの中に入っていたので、皆さんがＣＤですでに聞いて知っていた歌でした。（皆さんがＣＤを聞いてくださっていたことを知って、とてもうれしかったです！）

We also visited the evacuees at the Koriyama Agricultural Research Center, the Azuma Undou Sougou Kouen, the Aoyama Primary School, and visited for the second time the Koriyama Seishounen Kaikan. 郡山農業研究所、あづま運動総合公園、青山小学校も訪問しました。そして郡山市青少年会館へは今回二度目の訪問となりました。

We were able to bring a special Japanese manga book designed especially for the disaster, donated by the artist, our friend, Jeremy-san. 私達の友人のジェレミーさんはアーティストで、災害の状況のために特別マンガ本を製作したのですが、私たちに寄与してくださったので、それを皆さんにお渡しできました。

We made balloons for the children, and made many new friends. 子供達や新しくお友達になった方達のためにバルーンを作りました。

Once again, our wonderful managers and friends the Tadauras made our stay in their home in Fukushima very comfortable and wonderful. We couldn't have asked for a more fulfilling 3 days! 私たちの素晴らしきマネージャーであり、友人である只浦さんご夫婦が、福島にある彼らの家に滞在させてくれたので、私たちは快適に過ごすことができました。これ以上充実した３日間はなかったと言えるくらいです！

FUNBARE HIGASHI NIHON (June 20th to 23rd)

"Funbare” is the way the the people in Tohoku say “Gambare.” And Fumbaro Higashi Nihon is the name of this project started by “Sakana no Miura” and his associates. (see earlier post for more details)

「ふんばれ」とは、東北地域では「がんばれ」という意味で使われています。そして「ふんばろう東日本」とは、「魚の三浦さん」と彼の仲間が始めたプロジェクトの名前です。　（さらに詳しい事は前のポストを参照してください。）

It was amazing to see how what started as a personal initiative has grown and spread all over the country and even abroad, as all throughout the day, small boxes, bigger boxes, a whole bunch of boxes and even truckloads would arrive from concerned individuals and companies around the world—from people all wanting to do something to help support the recovery of this area.

一人の人の率先で始まった事が大きくなって、今では全国から、また海外まで広がり、世界中の気遣う個人の方々、また会社から、小さな箱から大きな箱、たくさんの箱、トラック一杯の荷が一日中届いてきます。皆、この地域の復興を支援するために何かすることを望んでいる人達です。

This trip, we had received 160 boxes of aid via Mr. & Mrs. Shimonaka (who are based out of Tamba City southern Japan) and their network of associates. Thank you so much for providing this. We were able to rent a truck to take up everything, as well as 10 volunteers all from Saitama and Chiba Prefectures—Noda, Shirai, Tateyama and Matsubushi.

このトリップで、私たちは（兵庫県丹波市に住む）下中夫妻とその知人の方達からなるネットワークを通じて160箱の支援物資を受け取りました。送ってくださってありがとうございます。全部運べるようにトラックを借り、また埼玉県や千葉県―野田市、白井市、館山市、松伏町から来た１０人のボランティアを連れて東北を訪問しました。

We helped to divide and sort the content of the boxes, so that it could easily be taken per family and took it to evacuation centers and temporary housing units.

Everyone from this evacuation center said they would be moving to a nearby housing unit the following day. There will continue to be needs once they move though, such as laundry soap, hangers, umbrellas (going into rain season) food seasoning, cutlery, dishware, and other basic housing necessities.

避難所や仮住居のために一家族分ごとに持っていけるように、送られて来た箱の中の物資を分類しました。

この避難センターにいる人達は、皆、次の日に近くの仮住居に引っ越すと言っていました。でもいったんそのような住宅に移ると、洗濯洗剤、ハンガー、傘（梅雨に入るので）、調味料、食器類、その他の生活必需品などが必要になってきます。

This is still the background view of many of the temporary housing units. A large part of the rubble has been cleared, but due to the scale of it, there's also lots that hasn't been touched yet, so it remains.

多くの仮住居ユニットが後ろに見えます。瓦礫の主要な部分は片付けられていますが、被害のスケールが大きかったので、まだ片付けられていない所はたくさんあります。

This trip Kato Aiki and Isamu Tanaka also drove up from Tateyama to help build a roof, as the makeshift tarp was beginning to need some improvement.

このトリップで、加藤アイキさんと田中勇さんが館山市から車で来てくれました。そして一時しのぎの防水シートが古くなってきたので、屋根を作ってくれました。

The local fisherman started bringing their fish to Mr. Miura, and the simple beginnings of rebuilding his fish outlet has begun.

Cutting, gutting, cleaning, filleting and packaging the fish for customers that love it.

地元の漁師の方が三浦さんに魚を持って来てくれたので、三浦さんの簡素な魚小売店の再開しました。

魚が好きなお客さんのために魚を切ってさばき、包装しました。

Lots of thanks to the many many people who were involved in so many ways to make this work possible. Every little bit makes a difference.

Special thanks to those who drove long hours tirelessly to get to Tohoku and back, as well as those who lent the use of their vehicles, man power, skill, and also those who gave financial support for the gasoline and tolls or to buy things that are most urgently needed.

いろいろな面で関わって、この仕事を可能にしてくださった非常に多くの人に心からのお礼を言いたいです。ありがとうございました。少しの助けでも東北地方に影響をもたらします。

More Trips to Minamisanriku-cho (May 31st – June 3rd, June 6th – 10th)

再び南三陸町へ（5月31日から6月3日までの訪問と6月6日から6月10日までの訪問）

Thanks to the combined efforts of A LOT of individuals, we have been able to coordinate the delivery of more supplies, and bring volunteers up north to help with the sorting and distribution.

多くの方々の協力に感謝します。そのおかげで、私たちは、さらに多くの生活必需品を届け、分類分けや仕分けを手伝ってくるボランティアの人達を送ったりすることができました。

May 31st – June 3rd　5月31日から6月3日までの訪問

The Kuriowa family collected more supplies from their neighbors and friends, and Avery Sakamoto and his sister Mari drove a truck all the way from Nagano prefecture to help us get it all to Minamisanriku-cho, along with supplies we collected in Noda.

黒岩さん家族は、再び友人や近所の方々から生活必需品を集めてくれました。坂本エィブリーさんと妹のマリさんが長野県からトラックで来てくれ、そのすべての物資とまた野田市で集まった物資を載せて南三陸町まで行ってくれました。

Everyone went up to help with the delivery. Arai san, Kaoru Ogihara, and Jamie Kuroiwa were able to stay longer. Supplies are constantly coming in from all over the country, and the sorting and delivery is a huge job. They were caught on film by a TV crew who were there at the time. Footage coming soon!

多くの人が配達の手伝いを助けにかけつけてくれました。新井さん、荻原かおる、黒岩ジェイミーは、他の人よりも長く滞在しました。物資は、日本中から絶え間なく届いていて、仕分けや配達は非常に大きな仕事です。そこにテレビの取材班がいたので、作業中の場面を撮られました。その映像をもうすぐお見せします！

A BIG THANK YOU to the Kanno family in Sayama-shi, Saitama, who financed the last trip on May 18th – 21st, and part of this trip as well.

June 6th – 10th　6月6日から6月10日までの訪問

We did another collection of relief supplies at Noda on June 5th, and after sorting the goods, we loaded up and were off with a team of 11 in three vehicles. Kato Aiki drove a truck up from Tateyama to help us get the stuff up there. First stop was at the Matsudo Market where our friend Mr. Kasai again donated dozens of boxes of fresh vegetables.

6月5日、野田市で再び救済物資を収集しました。物資の仕分け後、3台の車に物資を載せ、11人からなるチームも乗りました。館山市から加藤合気さんがトラックで来て荷の運搬を助けてくれました。最初に立ち寄った場所は松戸市場です。そこで、再び友人のカサイさんが何ダースもの箱に入った新鮮な野菜を寄付してくださいました。

Then for some drama: the gas station attendant noticed a problem with the back tires on the truck. The mechanic checked and recommended not taking this truck on any long trips…yikes. But shoganai, (Japanese for “oh well…”) all we could do was pray and drive REALLY slowly, as it was too late to back out now.

All was well in the end, as everyone arrived safely that night to a warm welcome by our friends there.

それからちょっとしたハプニングがありました。ガソリンスタンドの店員さんが、トラックの後ろのタイヤの問題に気づきました。整備工の人が点検し、このトラックを長い旅には使わないことを提案しました…困ったな。でも仕方ありません。後戻りするには遅すぎたので、ただ祈り、非常にゆっくりと運転しました。

結局は問題なく全員、安全に夜到着することができ、友人の方達に温かく迎えられました。

About Ainote volunteer network

We had formed a simple volunteer network with some friends last year called Ainote (literally “love’s hands”…but it doesn’t sound quite so cheesy in Japanese) with the goal of helping ordinary people to be able to help others in some way through coordinating overseas trips to developing countries, etc. (see website ainote.jp.fm) When the earthquake and tsunami hit, we were able to use the network to begin coordinating help for the Tohoku disaster victims. Bringing Food and Aid to Minamisanriku (Again!)

An associate of ours, Shimonaka, from Tamba city in southern Japan contacted us about a friend of his living near us who had 500 kgs of rice, along with other food items that he wanted to donate to the tsunami victims. We were able to pick up all the supplies, thanks to our friends Sean and Akira who came in their van to help us get it all to Noda. Thanks guys. Kasai san, a friend who works at the Matsudo Produce Market also donated a carload of fresh vegetables for us to take to Minami Sanrikucho in Miyagi Ken.

On the evening of May 18th, we loaded the supplies and drove through the night (thank you Arai san) to Minami Sanrikucho. Mr. Shimonaka and his son Daiki had gone on ahead of us with half of the supplies in their car. We spent the next three days there with Miura san, along with other volunteers who had come to help. We sorted the supplies that we had brought, along with other stuff that arrived every day by mail, and delivered it to some of the more than 40 locations that Miura san has been supporting regularly.

At this point, most of the immediate physical needs of the evacuees still in government sponsored evacuation centers are being covered by the government. Just prior to our trip, the Miyagi prefectural government announced that they were no longer requesting donations of supplies from private individuals, as they already had more than they needed. However, while this may be true in some cities, the situation on the ground in Minami Sanrikucho was a very different story. In most cases, only those who are still living in the evacuation centers are receiving relief aid from the government. Evacuees who want to move into government built temporary housing will in most cases no longer be eligible to receive supplies, meaning they have to buy all of their needs themselves. Because of this, many of the victims are unable to move into temporary housing even if they do win the housing lottery, as their jobs and livelihoods were wiped out in the disaster leaving them unable to support themselves. In Minami Sanrikucho, nearly 90% of the town was destroyed in the tsunami, so there are virtually no shops left to buy basic necessities. With thousands of vehicles destroyed, many of the victims have no way to get out of town to shop, even if they have the needed money. Basic utilities have yet to be reconnected in most areas, and even when the water network is back on, it is estimated it will take months for the water be drinkable, as the water table was polluted by the tsunami. There are also many people in the surrounding villages whose houses were not completely destroyed, but the first floor was ruined, leaving them without cooking or cleaning supplies and basic household goods, and no income. It is to these people that our friend “Sakana no Miura” (literally, Miura the fish man) has been delivering supplies that have been sent to him from concerned individuals all over the country. He has been in the news quite a few times since, and what was once just his personal initiative has grown considerably as more and more people heard about what he was accomplishing. We were put in touch with him through one of our friends in Saitama, and this was the second trip that we made to deliver supplies through Miura San’s network. We will be making another trip from May 31st, and hopefully again from June 6th and June 20th.

Tohoku Trip #4: Bringing Music to Fukushima, Day 2 and 3

Highlights:　ハイライト：

Meeting the Head of the Nasukashi Youth Center (which has been an evacuation center for some time now).

那須甲子青少年自然の家（避難センター）の責任者の方との出会い。

The people that we met at Nasukashi were some of the most friendly I've ever met in my life. They hung around after we were done to talk and get our autographs.

那須甲子には、今まで私が出会った人達の中でも一番フレンドリーだと思った人達がいました。私たちが歌い終わった後でも、そこに残って話しかけ、サインを求めてくださいました。

We were able to sing a lot of the songs that they requested (we were lucky that they requested songs that we knew!!)

彼らがリクエストした多くの歌を歌うことができました。（すでに知っていた歌をリクエストされたので、ラッキーでした!!）

This is the head manager of the Sukagawa Arena. A real funny, likeable guy. He spent a long time after we finished our show trying to figure out how to make animal balloons like us. And he managed in the end!!!

須賀川アリーナのマネージャーの方です。非常におかしく、感じのいい人です。ショーの後、彼は、長い時間をかけて、なんとか風船の動物を作ろうと試み、最後にはできました!!

At the Sukagawa Arena, all the children were out because it was a school day. But when we made a balloon for the one child who was in, everyone else came to hang out and see what other balloons we could make. So we ended up making a lot of balloons for everyone!

須賀川アリーナでは、子供達は学校に行っていて、いませんでしたが、一人残っていた子供のためにバルーンを作ってあげると、他の人達が皆来て、他にどんなものが作れるのかを見てくれました。結局は皆さんのためにたくさんのバルーンを作りました！

Happy to be on the road again!

People in the evacuation centers in Fukushima have either lost their homes in the tsunami, or are unable to return to their homes because of the unstable situation with the nuclear reactors.

再び旅に出てうれしく思います！

福島県の避難センターにいる人達は、津波で家がなくなったか、原発所の不安定な状況ために家に戻れないでいます。

Revisiting the Fukushima Big Palette! A lot of our friends were there, and we were able to sing some of the songs that they requested last time!

福島ビッグバレット再訪問！　以前お友達になった多くの人達がそこにいたので、先回の訪問でリクエストされた曲をいくつか歌いました！

We visited 4 places today. Such beautiful locations overlooking the most amazing view of Bandai-san and the surrounding hills. Fukushima is such a gorgeous place!!!

「愛の手」ボランティアが宮城県南三陸町のために支援物資を収集

The Kuroiwa family contacted us about working together to bring relief goods to Minamisanriku through a fisherman that they were put in touch with by one of their English students. This man has been working to personally bring aid and help to many of the houses that have been cut off by the disaster, and helped us to know what specific items could be a help in that area.

Arai-san was able to put an ad in the newspaper for items to be donated for this trip, and many of our neighbors brought what they could. The Kuroiwa family got aid from their neighbors as well.

On Sunday, we held an "aid-assembling" day, and volunteers from Ainote came to help with the packing. Thank you!!!

黒岩さん家族が連絡をくれ、英語クラスの生徒さんが紹介してくれた漁師の方を通して支援物資を南三陸町に届けるために、一緒に働けないかと聞いてきました。この漁師の方は、災害によって孤立した多くの家々を自ら訪問してまわり、救援物資を届けてきました。この方を通してその地域が必要としている物資が何であるか明確に知ることができました。

荒井さんが、このトリップのために必要とする支援物資を募る広告を新聞に出すと、ご近所の多くの方々が分け合うことのできる物を持って来てくださいました。黒岩さん家族もご近所の方々から物資をいただきました。

日曜日に、物資の仕分けをし、「愛の手」ボランティアの方々が来て荷作りを手伝ってくださいました。ありがとうございます!!!

Tohoku Trip #3: Ofunato

東北トリップ#3:　岩手県大船渡市

Ofunato is just above Rikuzentakata on the east coast, and we were able to visit it for the first time on this trip. This picture was taken along the port, where the ground has sunk so much that in some cases the roads and piers are completely submerged in water.

大船渡市は、陸前高田市のちょっと上に位置した、太平洋沿岸の町です。初めての訪問です。この写真は港から撮ったもので、地面が沈下していまい、場所によっては道路や桟橋が完全に水に漬かっています。

This sign was facing the main road, posted inside the Rias Hall evacuation center. (It says, "We refuse to lose to some tsunami!")

このサインは、主要な道路に面していて、リアスホール避難支援センターの中から貼られています。

This was taken across the street from the Ofunato Plaza Hotel, an area badly hit near the port. The sign is a warning sign put up after the Chile tsunami; it says "Disaster strikes just when you have forgotten about it."

これは大船渡プラザホテルの反対側から撮られた写真です。ここは、港近くで打撃の大きかった場所です。このサインは、チリの地震の後に貼られたもので、「災害は忘れた頃にやって来る。」と書いてあります。

This was a sticker pasted above the Ofunato volunteer center (a few temporary prefabs set up in the parking lot behind the police station.) It says, "Rise again, Ofanuto! Tohoku! Japan!"

We asked one of the managers of a larger evacuation center near the train station where we could find a small site that no one had visited yet. He drew us directions to a place that likely no one knew about, a group of about 10 people staying in a large room next to a shrine on the main road. We sang for them in the evening and brought some presents for the 2 kids who were there.

駅の近くの大きな避難支援センターのマネージャーに、誰もまだ訪問しなかったような小さな避難所はありますかと尋ねました。主要な道路に面した神社に隣接している部屋に10人ぐらいの人達が住んでいて、そこはおそらく誰も訪問したことがないだろうと言って、その場所への道を教えてくださいました。そこに行って、夜、そこの方達のために歌い、2人の子供達にプレゼントをあげました。

We found the Kumano shrine, located on top of a beautiful hill. We sang many songs and became good friends with the people there. (Many of them came up front to get the home-made CDs that we'd brought--a compilation of some encouraging songs that we sing--and said they would play them on their car stereo.)

As we were leaving, they brought us boxes (literally!!!) of snacks and drinks that they said they didn't need and insisted that they wanted to give us as a gratitude gift for our visit.

As Gene was loading them into the car, I remarked to the woman beside me that the wind was very cold, and I wasn't used to such cold weather. She said, "Yes, but without such cold weather, you cannot see such bright stars. It's times like these that I remember that, when nature gives you one hardship, it gives you a gift that is greater in return."

Almost everyone came outside to wave to us as we left.

美しい丘の上にある熊野神社を見つけました。そこで、たくさんの歌を歌い、皆さんとお友達になりました。（多くの方が前に来て、私たちのホームメイドのＣＤを取ってくださり、カーステレオで聞くと言ってくださいました。それは励ましになる歌を編集したもので、私たちが歌ってきたものです。）　私たちがそこを出ようとしていた時、皆さんがお菓子や飲み物を入れた箱を幾つか持って来て、自分たちには必要ないから、またお礼の印として持って行ってほしいと言ってくださいました。

ジーンが、それを車に積んでいた時、私のそばにいた女性に、風がとても冷たく、そのような寒い気候に自分が慣れていないと言ったら、彼女は「でも寒くないと、きれいな星は見えませんよ。自然が私たちに困難をもたらす時には、より大きな贈物を返してくれるということを、今のような時に覚えていかないといけないわね。」と言いました。

私たちが出発しようとしていた時、ほぼ全員の方がさよならを言いに来てくれました。

Tohoku Trip #3: Revisiting Rikuzentakata

東北トリップ#3：　岩手県陸前高田市を再訪

I was so impressed by this "temporary Lawson" convenience store just a little ways up the road from the piles of rubble that are what is left of central Rikuzentakata. Apparently, Lawson has quite a few programs in effect to get their convenience stores back into disaster areas where people have had a hard time buying groceries, etc. 感動しました！ (http://www.lawson.co.jp/company/news/035431/?ca=top_new_999)

陸前高田市の街中は瓦礫の山ですが、道路をちょっと行った所に「仮設ローロン」のお店があったので、とても感心しました！　ローソンは、人が食料品などを手に入れにくい被災地で、コンビニの店舗を置くなどのプログラムをいくつか行っています。感動しました！

We had a "happening" with our camera, when we'd been taking pictures with it all morning and then realized that there was no SD card in it. 大変！

So I have no pictures to show you our friends from Hikaminosono that we visited again (the facility for handicapped, and the evacuees in the gymnasium). We were received SO warmly by everyone who remembered us and said they were happy that we had come back. I was really happy to see them again.

朝ずっと写真を撮っていたのですが、とんだハプニングがあり、ＳＤカードが入っていなことに気づきました。大変！

だから「ひかみの園」（知的障害者施設で、体育館が避難所として使われています。）を再び訪問したのですが、そこにいるお友達の写真を皆さんにお見せすることができません。私たちの事を覚えていて下さった方から、とても温かい歓迎を受け、私たちが戻ってきてうれしいと言ってくださいました。私も皆さんに再会できて本当にうれしかったです。

After we sang for the people evacuating in this kouminkan, they ran off and put together some of their lunch for us! Here we are, very happily partaking (it was quite yummy and we couldn't even finish it all!)

この公民館で避難している人達のために歌を歌った後、彼らは急いで、自分たちのランチの中から、昼食を分けてくださいました！　とても喜んで、いただきました。（とてもおいしく、食べきれないくらいありました！）

The women talked to us about their experiences the day the tsunami came, while we ate our lunch. One woman who had lost her husband, was saved from losing her own life after she floated on wreckage for an entire day in the freezing temperature. They told us of other accounts that they had heard, speaking of some buildings that we had seen as we passed through, where people were told they'd be safe from the tsunami, but were sucked out into the sea as the entire wall was ripped away. Everyone in this room had lost loved-ones.

ランチを食べている時、女性の方達が津波の起こった日の事を話してくれました。一人の女性は、旦那さんをなく、彼女自身も、凍えるような気温の中、一日中漂流物の上にいた後に救われたのです。他にも、皆さんがそれぞれ耳にした話を聞かせてもらいました。安全だと言われて人が建物の中に避難したけれど、津波が来て壁全体がはぎとられ、流されて行った人達がいたということも聞きました。（そのような建物を私たちもこのトリップで目にしました。）　この部屋にいる人達は全員、誰か愛する人を亡くされたのです。

大船渡のボランティアセンター（陸前高田ボランティアセンターは、数日前に建ったばかりでした！）から送られてきたボランティアの人達が、私たちの歌が好きだと言ってくれました。

This is us back at the Sun Village dome. Our friends here remembered us and this time came to the front row to sing along with us!! Many of them were out (the children go to school, etc.) and so our show was very small and personal, and we sang some songs that they requested, including "Kitaguni no Haru," "Yume no Naka e," and "Ai san san."

サンビレッジのドームにまた行きました。ここにいるお友達は、私たちのことを覚えていて、前に座って一緒に歌ってくれました!！　多くの人が外出中でした。（子供達は学校に行っていました。）　だから私たちの歌を聞いてくれた人は少数でしたが、親密な感じでした。「北国の春」「夢の中へ」「愛燦燦」のような歌をリクエストされ歌いました。

Tohoku trip #3: Visiting Kids in Kawahigashi

東北トリップ#3：　福島県川東の子供達を訪問

This is us at a preschool in Kawahigashi, Fukushima prefecture. All of these kids are from families who were evacuated from the reactors in Fukushima (the staff and caretakers as well) and set up in temporary school groups. Gene and I donned our clown costumes and made balloons (along with Yuki and Isamu from "Let's Party Tokyo" and Yuki Yamashita.)

福島県川東にある幼稚園です。そこにいる子供達は、皆、福島の原子炉から避難してきた家族の子供達です。（スタッフや子供を見る人達も皆そうです。）　ここは仮設の学級です。私とジーンも、ピエロにふん装して、風船を作りました。（山下さんと「レッツ・パーティ東京」の久保田さんと松岡さん一緒です。）

Tohoku trip #3: Revisiting Koriyama

東北トリップ#3：　福島県郡山市へ再訪

April 25th　4月25日

Today we visited 2 evacuation centers in Koriyama. One of the women that we talked to said that she had been here for over 40 days.

今日、郡山市にある２つの避難支援センターを訪問しました。私たちが話をした女性は、ここに来て40日以上になるそうです。

We got to work together with the clowns from "Let's Party Tokyo" again, Yuki Kubota and Isamu Matsuoka, who are professional entertainers, and definitely gave the kids a good show.

「レッツ・パーティ東京」のピエロさん役の久保田さんと松岡さんとチームを組むことになりました。彼らはプロのエンターテーナーで、子供達に楽しいショ―を見せてくれます。

Here we are at Koriyama Seishounenkaikan, passing out the gifts that we brought with us. (We found that, as these evacuation centers are not in the same situation as those housing evacuees in tsunami-devastated areas, they are relatively well taken-care of in terms of food and every-day items. So we brought little gifts (the clowns from "Let's Party" brought many sponsored items for the children!!) such as these dolls.

郡山青少年会館で、もって来たプレゼントを配っているところです。（これらの避難支援センターは、津波でほぼ壊滅状態になった地域の避難者を支援するセンターとは同じ状況ではなく、食糧や生活必需品は比較的によく足りています。だから小さなプレゼントをもってきました。この人形の品のように、「レッツ・パーティ」のピエロさん達のスポンサーから支援された贈り物をたくさんもってきました。

Here we are at Koriyama "Big Palette", which is kind sort of a "Makuhari Messe" of Fukushima. It was a massive building with huge halls and corridors, and people living in cardboard sections in every available area.

「ビッグパレット」です。ここは、福島県の幕張メッセのような感じです。非常に大きな建物で、大きなホールや廊下があり、人々があちらこちらの段ボールで区切られた所で生活しています。

Here, we received many requests for songs to sing when we come back. A few people came to us after our show was over and expressed regret that they hadn't requested this and that song that they would've loved to hear.

One man requested "Country Roads", at the end of which he said, "Thank you for singing that song. We all want to go back to our beloved home town, so it has special meaning for us."

私たちが今回訪問した時、多くの歌のリクエストがありました。またショーが終わってからも、数人の人が私たちの所に来て、あれやこれをリクエストすればよかったと話してくれました。一人の人は「カントリー・ロード」をリクエストし、歌が終わったあと、「歌ってくれてありがとう。私たちはみな、故郷に帰りたいから、その歌は特別なんだ。」と言いました。

(The evacuation centers in the Fukushima area house people who are unable to go back to their homes due to the catastrophe caused by the radiation leaks at nuclear reactors near the coast. In some cases, these people evacuated from the initial earthquake on March 11th, and have never been able to go back to their house to collect their things. Others were given more time before they had to move out, but in most cases did not know even half of the reality of the situation--which is that they might never be able to go back in their lifetime--when they left their homes and pets. Because of their unique situation, a lot of the evacuees in these centers are still incredulous and aggravated that such a thing has happened to them. That's why it was important to us to show our support for these people and to let them know that we sympathize with them during this emotionally turbulent time.

At the end of our performance, Gene said, "We came here intending to help you to have fun and be uplifted, and to say, 'Keep fighting!' But we came and met you all and now we don't think that you could possibly do any more than you are already doing. Now we feel like we should take a lesson from you and keep fighting a little harder. Thank you!")

福島地域の避難支援センターにいるのは、海岸のそばにある原子力発電所で起きた放射能漏れゆえに、避難しなければならなかった人たちでした。人によっては、3月11日に起きた最初の地震から避難して来た日以来まだ一度も家に帰っておらず、自分の物を取りに行っていない人がいます。避難する前にもっと時間のあった人もいますが、ほとんどの人は状況の現実を半分も理解していなかったそうです。つまりペットを置いて家を出た時、ずっと長い間戻って来られないかもしれないということです。彼らのユニークな状況のゆえに、これらのセンターに避難している方々の中には、そのような事が自分に起こったことが信じ難く、悩んでいる方が多くいます。だから私たちが、この情緒的に動揺する時期において、理解と同情を示して彼らの支えとなることは大切だと思います。

私たちのパフォーマンスの後、ジーンが皆さんに向かってこう言いました。「私たちは『がんばってください！』と言って、皆さんの励みになり、また皆さんに楽しい時をもってもらうつもりで来ました。でも実際に来て皆さんと会ってから、皆さんが十分がんばっているので、それ以上出来る事は何もないとわかりました。だから自分がもう少しがんばることに関して、皆さんから教訓を教えてもらったように思います。ありがとうございました！」

Tohoku Trip #2: Minamisanriku day 3

東北トリップ＃2　宮城県南三陸町　3日目

The last of our 3-day visit to Minamisanriku and the surrounding areas, we were able to visit several evacuation sites, and sang songs at 3 of them. First, we went back to Shizukawa High School on the top of the hill to give them a bunch of CDs that we burned in the car, which is where this picture was taken.

南三陸町とその周辺の地域を3日間訪問しましたが、その最後の日に避難支援所をいくつか訪問することができ、３つの場所で歌を歌うことができました。最初に、丘の上にある志津川高校に行って、車の中で焼いたＣＤをたくさん皆さんに受け取っていただきました。この写真はそこへ行く途中で車の中から撮りました。

I don't have a picture of it, but we went back to Natari to sing for the people evacuating in the Natari Hoikuen.

写真はないのですが、名足に戻って、名足保育園で避難生活している方のために歌いました。

The last stop of our day was the Kaiyou Shounen no Ie. They had no power (like most sites in Minamisanriku) and so all of the photos were dim and fuzzy, as it was getting later in the afternoon. There were a few kids, playing with some volunteers, and we were able to sing for everyone in the main lobby.

この日最後に訪問した所は、カイヨウ少年の家です。停電していました。（南三陸のほとんどの避難所は停電しています。）だから夕方に近いこともあって写真がやや暗くぼやけています。何人か子供達もいて、ボランティアーの人達と遊んでいました。私たちもメインのロビーで皆さんのために歌を歌うことができました。

東北への旅　＃2：　宮城県南三陸町と牡鹿半島

Today was quite a long and satisfying day. We met so many people and visited several places along quite a stretch of coast from Minamisanriku up and around the jagged Oshika-hanto coastline.

今日はかなり長い日でしたが、満足のいく日でした。南三陸町の海岸沿いからぎざぎざした牡鹿半島の海岸沿いにあるいくつかの場所を訪問して、とても多くの人に出会いました。

We left Sendai early this morning in order to arrive at Minamisanriku Bayside Arena by 9:30. Now, as I write this, we are Sendai-bound on the Sanrikudou, eating our dinner, and drinking some quite delicious plum cider given to us by our friends in the Tomarihama Seikatsu Center where we sang last.

南三陸のベイサイド・アリーナに午前9時半に到着できるように、今朝早く仙台を出発しました。今、夕食を食べながら、これをタイプしています。そして仙台に向かって三陸道を走っています。また先回訪問した泊浜生活センターのお友達からいただいたおいしい梅サイダーも飲んでいます。

At the start of the day we travelled along some coastal roads outward of Minamisanriku looking for something that we didn't find, and ended up being invited to sing at Wabayama Seikatsu Center in Natari. Everyone was just then sitting around having a break, so they were excited to see a show, including a news crew from Osaka who came in to check it out. We were given such warm applause, and wanted to stay and talk to everyone as long as we could. One man sitting in the corner, whom we were introduced to as "the most えらい man in the area," told us to come back as many times as we could. 「一回だけじゃ絶対足りないからね。」Another woman told us that he had been working so hard in the last month that his body had become weak and he needed to recover.

一日の始めに、私たちは南三陸に向けて海岸沿いを走りながら、ある所を探していたのですが、見つかりませんでした。結局、名足にある若馬山生活センターで歌うように招かれました。その時、皆さんが座って休憩を取っていたところだったので、ショーを見られることを喜んでくれました。大阪のニュース班も、何をやっているのか見るために入ってきました。とても温かい拍手をしてくださいました。だから私たちもなるだけ長くいて、皆さんと話すことを望みました。隅に座っていた人は、一番偉い人だと他の人から紹介されたのですが、その人は、できる限り何度も訪問するようにと言ってくれました。「一回だけじゃ絶対足りないからね。」と。もう一人の女性は、彼がずっと働きづめで体力がなくなってきているので、休養する必要があるのだとおしえてくれました。

We couldn't stay nearly as long as we would've liked, as we had to rush off to make our next appointment at Heisei no Mori, which was a sort of sports / activities-center with a panoramic view of the once-scenic coastline. There, we were able to pass out a few compilation music-CDs with meaningful songs like "Change the World" and "Kibou", which were readily received, as some people here and there throughout the room had CD players.

「平成の森」での約束に間に合うように出発しなければならなかったので、望むほど長くいることはできませんでした。「平成の森」は総合スポーツ施設で、そこからはかつて美しい海岸の全景を眺める事ができたのでした。そこでも、｢世界を変えよ｣や「希望」のような意味ある歌のコレクションのＣＤを何枚か配布しました。部屋の中でＣＤプレーヤーをもっている人達がいたので、すぐに受け取ってもらえました。

This is us at Shizukawa Highschool singing with guest-star Yamauchi-san (one of the managers of the evacuation site), who requested 「なごり雪」. He said it was one of his favorite songs. He told us that when we come back, we need to be sure to ask for "Yama-chan."

志津川高校で、私たちがゲストスターである山内さん（避難所のマネージャー）と一緒に歌っているところです。彼は「なごり雪」が好きなので、それをリクエストしました。私たちがまた戻って来る時には、必ず「山ちゃん」を呼ぶようにと言ってくれました。

Finally, we visited the Tomarihama Seikatsu Center that someone at one of the places we'd visited previously had requested we look for, as it apparently does not receive many visits. Here, the 区長 wanted to meet us, and thank us personally for what we were doing. He told us that their vision is to rebuild the city and reopen the fishing businesses within 3 years. We were told by everyone to definitely come back in 3 years, to "see what you have helped rebuild". They told us, "If you come back then, we'll make you wakame soup and show our thanks properly!" Of course, they told us that they hope we can come back to sing for them again in the near future.

とうとう泊浜生活センターを訪問しました。先回、私たちが訪問した場所のひとつで、ある人が泊浜生活センターはあまりこのような訪問を受けないので、訪問してくださいとお願いされました。ここでは、区長さんが出てきて、私たちのしている事に対してお礼を言って下さいました。そこの人々のビジョンは、3年以内に、そこの町を復興させて漁業を再開することだと彼は話してくれました。3年後には必ず戻って来て、「復興のためにあなた達が貢献したことを見に」来るようにと、皆さんが言ってくれました。また戻って来るなら、その時には、感謝のしるしにわかめスープを作って飲ませてあげようとも言ってくれました。もちろん、私たちが近い将来にまた戻って来て歌うことも望んでいると言ってくれました。

This is a sign that we passed several times as we went back and forth on one of the reopened roads along the coastline, and I finally got to take a picture of it the last time we passed it. (It says, "To everyone in the country, thank you very much for your support." I wanted to put it on my blog and show it to everyone. I have no idea who made it--as you can see, they didn't sign their name--but it speaks volumes about the kindness and resilience of the people in these parts. Victims of one of the most terrible disasters ever to befall this country, they still do their utmost to show thanks and appreciation for the small things that are being done for them, even when everyone else in the country is wishing that they and the government could do more. It's this kind of strength of spirit that inspires me anew with every person that we meet.

海岸沿いの道を何度も行ったり来たりするとよく見かけるサインです。とうとう写真に撮ることができました。｢全国の皆さん、ご支援をありがとうございます。｣と書いてあります。写真を撮って、私のブログに載せて、皆さんに見てもらいたかったのです。誰がこれを書いたのかわかりませんが、見てのとおり、書いた人の名前はありません。でもこれを見ると、この地域の人達の親切さとねばり強さがわかるでしょう。この国で起こった最もひどい災害の犠牲者でありながら、自分たちのためになされている小さな事に対して全力を尽くして感謝の気持ちを示しているのですから。他の多くの人達が、自分達自身、また政府がもっと多くのことをできたらと願っているのに。そのような精神力は、私たちの出会う一人一人の中にあり、私を新しく霊感してくれます。

「東北、がんばってます！」

This man, after watching our show at the Bayside arena, came to tell us his story. He is leaning on a crutch in this photo, as the arm and leg on the right side of his body were paralyzed when he was washed along in the tsunami, and was slammed against a tree. What he wanted to tell us was, that while it was cold outside, and he cannot move very well, his heart was warmed by our singing. When Tadaura-san asked him if he could take a picture with me for my blog, he gave me a message to give everyone. "We are all, each and every one of us, fighting here in Tohoku. We are doing our best, with a heart full of thanks." He wanted everyone to know that everyone is 「しっかりがんばってます。」

On the way home, seeing all the signs on the roads and in the store windows, even in Sendai city, 「がんばれ、宮城！」　「がんばれ、志津川！」　「がんばっぺ、日本！」 etc., I almost cried thinking about how wonderful it was that those who had almost lost their lives in the disaster would read a sign like that and want the author of it to know that they were 「がんばってます。感謝いっぱいでがんばってます。」

東北の人たち、被災者、ボランティアたち、どこの人のためにでもがんばりたくなりました。がんばろう、日本！

この男性は、ベイサイド・アリーナのショーの後、私たちのところに来て話をしてくれました。この写真で彼は、杖に寄りかっています。津波が来た時に体が木に強くたたきつけられ、体の右側の脚が麻痺してしましました。外は寒く、体を自由を動かせないけれど、彼が私たちに語ったことは、歌によって心が温まったということでした。只浦さんが、ブログのために私と一緒にいるところを写真に撮っていいかと聞いた時、皆さんに伝えるメッセージをくれました。「私たちひとりひとりが全員、ここ東北のために闘っています。感謝いっぱいでベストを尽くしています。」　彼はそこの人達が、「しっかりがんばってます。」ということを、皆さんに知ってもらいたかったのです。

帰る途中、町の道路や店のウィンドーには、仙台市でもそうですが、「がんばれ、宮城！」　「がんばれ、志津川！」　「がんばっぺ、日本！」などというサインがあちこちに見られました。この震災でほとんど命を失いかけた人達がこのようなサインを見て、自分達が「がんばってます。感謝いっぱいでがんばってます。」とサインを書いた人に知ってもらいたいと思っていること、それがどれだけ素晴らしいかを考えると、涙が出そうになります。

東北の人たち、被災者、ボランティアたち、どこの人のためにでもがんばりたくなりました。がんばろう、日本！

東北トリップ＃2：　南三陸町を再び訪問

April 20th　4月20日

Yesterday, Gene and I headed out to Fukushima to meet with our friends, Tadaura-san, Eiko-san, and Yoshi, to take a second trip up to Tohoku!!!

昨日、私とジーンは、福島に行き、そこで友人の只浦さん、栄子さん、ヨシさんに会い、それから東北への2回目のトリップを彼らと一緒にしました!!!

We decided to go to Minamisanriku to revisit the friends that we had made when we sang at the Bayside Arena and Shizukawa primary school on our last trip. We were surprised how many people remembered us.

南三陸に行って、この間のトリップでベイサイド・アリーナと志津川小学校で歌った時に出会ってお友達になった人達をもう一度訪問することに決めました。多くの人が私たちの事を覚えていてくれたので驚きました。

We met a lot of kids that we didn't get to meet last time.

先回会わなかった多くの子供達に出会いました。

This woman had a green jacket that she asked me to sign. She said that she was getting the signatures of people who helped and inspired her during this time, as a keepsake. I was honored to be one of her signatures!

この女性は、グリーンのジャケットを持って来て、私にサインしてほしいと言いました。彼女は、この時にあって彼女にとって助けとなったか、また励ましになった人達にサインをしてもらい、そのジャケットを思い出の品としていると言ってくれました。私は光栄に感じました。

Here we are at the Bayside Arena. This time, we sang outside, and quite a few people stood out in the near-zero-degree weather to hear us sing. Someone requested, "We Are The World" and Gene and I gave it our best shot.

ベイサイド・アリーナです。今回は外で歌いました。かなりの多くの人が気温ゼロの天候の中で立って歌を聞いてくれました。誰かが「ウィ・アー・ザ・ワールド」の歌をリクエストしたので、私とジーンはベストを尽くして歌いました。

Miyakoshi part 2 - Atago Primary School

When we began visiting evacuation centers, we didn’t know how the organizers would receive us, but in every place, we were very well received, and most of them seemed to understand that since the immediate crisis of physical survival has been taken care of, that the emotional care (heart care) of the evacuees is of prime importance.

私たちが避難支援センターを訪問し始めた時は、責任者の人達が私達をどのように受け入れてくれるかわかりませんでしたが、すべての訪問先で温かく歓迎されました。そして、差し迫った実際面でのサバイバル危機状態は一段落した今、避難している人達の情緒的なケア（心のケア）が一番大切だということを、理解してくださっているように思われました。

At the first Evacuation center we visited, Horii-san gave a small speech about our hearts knit together in this time, but she needed to stop and get a hold of herself when she began to cry. At the next centers she kept it together and got though them without breaking down. In every place we sang, there were people who cried. When I saw someone begin to cry, I needed to look away, or I knew I would cry too. We knew that if we walk around crying, it really won’t help encourage these people to give them the faith to go on.

最初に訪問したセンターで、堀井さんがこのような時に私たちが心を合わせてがんばることのスピーチをしましたが、涙が出てくると話を少しやめて間を取る必要がありました。次のセンターで彼女は泣かないよう涙をこらえ話を最後まですることができました。歌を歌った所はどこでも、泣く人がいました。誰かが涙を流しているのを見ていると、私は他の場所に視線をやる必要がありました。そうでないと自分も泣き出してしまうからです。私が泣きながら歩き回っていると、これらの人達ががんばっていく励みにはならないと思ったので、涙をこらえていました。

In this room, almost every person cried while we sang. We thought we might have made a mistake in our song selection, but everyone was so thankful and appreciative, bowing to the ground and thanking us over and over. It seems that for many of these evacuees, this is the first time they have relaxed, and let down their emotional walls and allowed tears to finally flow. When we sing, some just sit there with their eyes closed and drink in the music, as if they are bathing in a heavenly stream.

この部屋では、ほとんど全員の人が歌を聞いて涙を流しました。私たちは選曲を間違ったと思ったのですが、皆さんにとても喜んでもらえました。そして頭を低く下げて、何度も何度もお礼を言ってくださったのです。これらの避難者の方々の多くにとっては、初めて緊張をほぐし、自分を守っていた感情の壁をくずし、涙を流す時となったようでした。私たちが歌を歌う時、ただ目を閉じて音楽を静かに飲み込んでいる人もいました。天の小川に浸かっているかのように。

We’ve seen some documentaries recently where psychologists explain the need for some emotional outlet for people who have gone through traumatic or horrific situations. Some recent reports go as far as to suggest that from this point on, the emotional care of those still in evacuation centers, is the most important thing.

最近見たドキュメンタリーで、心理学者が、精神外傷的経験、または恐ろしい状況を経験した人達には、何か情緒的なはけ口が必要となると説明していました。最近のレポートでは、避難支援センターで今だ生活している人達にとって、今後一番重要となっていくものは、情緒的なケアであると言われています。

I have never seen so many people cry, but at the same time, I have never seen so many people smile through their tears and be so thankful and appreciate of our small efforts of encouragement.

私は、こんなにも多くの人が涙を流すのを今まで見たことがありません。それと同時にまた、こんなにも多くの人が涙を通してほほ笑み、私たちの小さな励ましの行為を感謝して、喜んでもらえるのも初めてのことです。

This woman was looking through the pages of her photo book over and over again. When I went to talk with her, she showed me some of the photos. They were of her house which is no more.

この女性は、写真アルバムを何度も見ていました。私が声をかけた時、彼女は写真を見せてくれました。それは彼女の家の写真で、家はもうありません。

Visiting Miyakoshi and Taro

岩手県宮古市と田老町を訪問

April 11th

Taro was notorious for its 10 meter-high sea-wall, built after the town was hit successively by tsunamis in 1896 and 1933. According to our friend who took us around, everyone was taught in school what to do in the case of a tsunami, and the ancient wisdom about where it was safe to build houses, etc. Taro was a city known to be well-prepared for a tsunami.

This is a photo from before the tsunami--all of the houses in view are nothing but piles of garbage now. Reporters assert that the seawall actually killed more people, trapping the water inside a kind of "bowl" that was formed between the wall and the surrounding mountains.

(Here is another photo of the houses built near the tsunami-wall. Again, all no longer standing.)

田老町は、1896年と1933年に津波が続けて起こった後、10メートルの高さの防波堤を建てたことで有名です。あちこち案内してくれた私たちの友人によると、津波が起こった場合、何をすべきか、またどこに家を建てると安全かなどの昔からの知恵を皆、学校で教えられてきたそうです。だから田老町は、津波に対して備えがよくできている町として知られていました。

これは、津波が起こる前の写真です。この写真で見る家屋は、今はすべて瓦礫の山となっています。レポーターは、実際には防波堤によってもっと多くの人が死んだと主張しています。防波堤と周辺の山によって「お椀」のような状態を作り出し、その中に水がたまってしまう結果になったからです。

（これも、また防波堤のそばに立っている家々の写真です。これらの家屋も今はもうこのようには立ってはいません。）

This sign means that the owner has cleared this house to be torn down. These markings were everywhere on pieces of "house" that were barely standing, amidst piles of buildings that didn't hold together as well.

このサインは、持ち主がこの建物を解体してもいいと許可したという意味です。このようなサインはどこにでも見られ、瓦礫の中でほとんど倒れかかっているような家にも見られます。

The men standing behind me were from the Japanese self-defense force. They were poking their long poles into piles of rubble looking for bodies. There were little neat piles of distinctive items in different places on the seawall--maybe to mark places where they were found, or the bodies that they were found near, to help in the identification process.

私の後ろにいるのは、自衛隊の人達です。彼らは長い棒で瓦礫の中を探り、遺体を探しています。防波堤のそばには、特色のある品が積まれた小さな山があちこち見られました。それは遺体が発見された場所か、その場所の近くに印をつけるためで、遺体確認のためなのでしょう。

This is our team (minus Gene, taking the picture) plus Hatakeyama-san, our friend whose hometown is Miyakoshi, and who was visiting to help his parents, as their store and house were flooded with mud on the first floor. He took us around to the places we visited, and we wouldn't have made it very far without him. Thank you, Hatakeyama-san!

私たちのチームと友人の畠山さんです。（ジーンは写真を撮っていたので、この中にはいません。）畠山さんは宮古市出身で、御両親の家とお店の一階が泥であふれていたので、それを片付けるのを手伝うために来ていました。彼が案内してくれたので、あちこち訪問することができました。彼のおかげで、いろいろな事を達成することができました。畠山さん、ありがとうございました！

This girl was with her grandparents. She came up to us to tell us that her birthday was "the day after tomorrow," which happened to also be Gene's birthday. Her grandparents were really happy, talking about what good fortune it was that we had met.

この女の子は、彼女の祖父母と一緒です。彼女は、「あさって」が自分の誕生日だとおしえてくれました。たまたまジーンと同じ誕生日でした。彼女の祖父母の方は、私たちと出会って運がよかったと言って、とても喜んでくれました。

The best part about this last leg of the trip was that we our friends Isamu and Yuki (http://helpeastjapan.wordpress.com) were able to come back up to join forces with us, driving all the way up to Morioka from Chiba prefecture in the middle of the night. So awesome, and it made a big difference for the kids.

この旅の最後の部分に関して一番いい事は、友達のイサムとユウキが(http://helpeastjapan.wordpress.com)チームに再び加わることができ、夜中、千葉県から盛岡まで運転を助けてくれました。彼らがいたおかげで、子供達をとてもハッピーにすることができました。

This is our van, which, although you can't tell by the picture, is mucked out from our travels through the dust trails that wound through the tsunami rubble.

We got to sing outside in the frigid Iwate temperature at another main evacuation center in Taro.

Visiting Rikuzen-Takata--Hikaminoen Handicapped Center and Gymansium

岩手県陸前高田、ひかみの園（介護・福祉施設）を訪問

Then we visited the Hikaminoen evacuation center, which turned out to be a small gymnasium belonging to a government facility for the mentally disabled. So we did a few songs for them too.

ひかみの園災害避難所を訪れました。そこには小さな体育館があり、国の施設で、精神障害者の方のためのです。そこで何曲か歌いました。

This woman had been put in the facility a few days before. She wasn't handicapped, but she had difficulty speaking. She wept and wouldn't let go of me as she told me that she lost her house and her entire life in the tsunami.

この女性は数日前にこの施設に移されたそうです。精神障害があるわけでないのですが、話すのが困難なのです。彼女は泣きながら、自分が津波で家や自分の全人生を失ったと私にずっと話してくれました。

This is the Hikaminoen evacuation center. Here again, many of the people were out in the wrecked town, but the people who had stayed were so excited to hear us sing and invited us inside right away.

ここがひかみの園災害避難所です。ここでも、多くの人達が瓦礫となった町に行っていたので、あまり人がいませんでしたが、そこにいた人たちは、私たちを喜んで中に受け入れてくれ、私たちの歌う歌に聞き入ってくれました。

To show their gratitude for our visit, they sang the song of Rikuzen Takata for us.

私たちが訪問したことへのお礼として、彼らは私たちのために陸前高田の歌を歌ってくれました。

It's not a very good quality video, but it captured the moment--probably the most emotional moment of this entire trip, for me. I took a picture of the words to the song pasted on the wall of the gymnasium, because I felt so strongly the love that the people of Rikuzen-takata had for its town, and I wanted to remember it.

あまり質の良くないビデオ映像ですが、見所をとらえていると思います。この時は、私がこの旅で一番感情的になった時だと思います。体育館に貼ってあった歌詞を写真に撮りました。陸前高田の人々の、町への愛を私はとても強く感じだからです。だからそれを覚えておきたかったのです。

This woman, my dad met outside, earlier on in the day. She was outside laying out photos that she'd picked up from the rubble of her home, to dry in the sun. Later on, after we sang for them, she told me, "Today is a good day. You came and sang for us, and I found the body of my son." She told Horii-san that she's looking for 2 more family members.

この女性は、この日、私の父が外で会った人です。彼女は、自分の家の瓦礫の中から写真を拾って持ち帰り、太陽で乾かしているのです。後に、私たちは歌を歌ったのですが、彼女は、私に「今日はいい日だった。あなた達が来て歌を歌ってくれ、そして息子の遺体を見つけたから。」と私に言いました。彼女は、もう二人身内を探していると堀井さんに言いました。

Visiting Rikuzen-Takata--the Sun Village

岩手県陸前高田市、サンビレッジを訪問

April 10th ４月１０日

Today we went to Rikuzen-Takata, another entire town wiped out by the tsunami. The local officials have estimated that between 20 to 40% of the population is dead, and over 80% of the houses were swept away, even though the town had a 6.5 meter seawall.

According to some news stories, the harbor-gates got jammed, and 45 firemen got swept away as they tried to close it manually before the tsunami reached the town.

今日、陸前高田市を訪問しました。この町全体も、津波によってほぼ壊滅状態です。地元の役所関係によると、人口の２０％から４０％の人が命を奪われ、６．５メートルの防波堤があったにもかかわらず、家屋の８０％以上が波で流されました。

あるニュースでは、津波が来る前に、港のゲートが閉めようとしていた４５人の消防隊員も流されたしまったということです。

All of the evacuation zones were up on the top of the surrounding hills, and fairly close together. But to get to each other, one had to go down the hill and through the wrecked town around to another road up another hill.

We went to the Sun Village dome, which is a big open-air sports center with fake grass. Because it was open, all the evacuees slept in tents, donated by the Rotary club.

災害避難所は、全部、町を囲む丘の上にあり、互いにわりと近い距離にありました。でも隣りの避難所に行くには、丘を下りていって、瓦礫の町を通り、そしてまた丘を上がっていかなくてなりませんでした。

私たちは、サンビレッジ・ドームへ行きました。そこは、人工芝を敷いた広い戸外のスポーツセンターです。戸外なので、避難者の人たちは、皆、ロータリークラブが寄付してくれたテントで寝泊まりしていました。

Most of the people who live in the evacuation center were out poking through the wreckage of their houses, or looking for bodies, so the space was relatively empty. But people grabbed up the dolls that we brought them, and they were thankful for the few boxes of toilet paper that we had with us.

避難所に住んでいるほとんどの人が、自分の家を見に行ったり、身内の遺体を探しに行っていたので、そこにいた人は少ないでした。でも私たちが持って来た人形は喜ばれ、トイレットペーパーも感謝してくれました。

It'll give you some idea of how much help and support the people of this village need during this time. Not only the people who've gone to the evacuation centers, but the people just a stone's-throw away from being washed away, who have their houses but no food and supplies.

It also reinforced the things that I've heard many times but never taken very seriously about how ferocious and devastating a tsunami can be. I wondered how many people ran up to the forth floor thinking they'd be safe, and got washed away out of buildings that they never thought a wave could reach.

これは、私たちが南三陸町を車で通った時に、窓から撮ったビデオ映像の一部です。これを見ると、この町の人が今どれだけ助けやサポートを必要としているか見当がつくと思います。避難所に行った人たちだけではなく、もうちょっとのところで流されるところだったけれど助かり、家もあるけれど、食べ物や必需品がない人たちも、助けやサポートを必要としています。

また津波がどれだけ凶暴で破壊力があるかを私は今まで何度も耳にしてきたけれど、一度も真剣に受け留めませんでした。でもそれが真実であることを、これを見ると本当にわかります。いったい何人の人が、４階に上がって行けば安全だと思ったのに、決して波が届かないと思った建物に水が入ってきて、流されてしまったでしょうか。

南三陸町のベーサイド・アリーナと志津川小学校訪問する

April 9th ４月９日

Today we visited Minami-Sanriku village--the footage that I've seen over and over again on the television of the village that was completely wiped out by the tsunami. It was rainy and gloomy, and sort of fitting considering the circumstances. But we were determined to bring as much happiness and hope as possible, in spite of the weather.

今日、南三陸町を訪問しました。南三陸町は、津波によって壊滅した所で、私はテレビで何度もその映像を見ました。私たちが訪問した日は、雨が降っていて、薄暗く、その状況に合っているようでした。でもそのような天候にもかかわらず、できるだけ多くの幸福と希望を届けようと、心に決めました。

We visited Shizugawa Shougakkou--a primary school whose gymnasium was decorated for a beginning-of-school celebration that it didn't get to have.

志津川小学校を訪問しました。そこの体育館は、入学式のお祝いのために準備がされていたけれど、そのために使われることはなかったのです。

We sang, and received such enthusiastic support from the evacuees.

One man, bowing very low and gripping my hand firmly, said, "We will fight. We won't disappoint you for coming all the way out here. We've received power from you, and it will make a difference." He was so serious, and the ladies around him all nodded in agreement.

そこで歌を歌いましたが、避難しておられる人たちから熱意ある反応を受け取りました。一人の人は、深いおじぎをしてくれ、私の手を固く握って、「がんばるよ！　ここまで来てくれたのに、失望させちゃ悪いからね。力をもらった。これから変わるからね。」　真面目に彼はそう言ったのです。そして周りにいた女性の方たちも、みな一緒にうなずいてくれました。

Then we went to the Bayside Arena, the disaster relief headquarters on the hill overlooking Minami-Sanriku.

それからベーサイド・アリーナに行きました。そこは、南三陸町を見下ろす丘の上にある被災地本部でした。

The biggest and liveliest headquarters we've seen yet. This was their pharmacy and hospital-supplies room.

今まで見た中で一番大きく、活発な本部でした。ここは、薬や病院用品の部屋です。

Several people told us that, although this site is abuzz with people carrying aid in and out, and important people coming to survey the situation, we are the first people who came to with no other purpose but to lift the spirits of the evacuees. This was also the first place that very loudly and exuberantly requested an encore.

この場所は、人でざわめき立っていて、救援物資を運ぶために出入りする人や、状況を調査するために来た重要な人がいましたが、避難民の気持ちを引き上げる目的だけのために来たのは、私たちが初めてだと何人もの人達が言ってくれました。またここは、大声で、元気よくアンコールをお願いされた最初の場所でした。

宮城県石巻市石巻専修大学を訪問

April 8th 　　4月8日

Today, we went to the main Volunteer / Disaster Relief coordination center in Ishinomaki, set up in what is usually Ishinomaki Senshu Daigaku. You can see only a few of the tents that belonged to the volunteers who were camped out there, hoping to make a dent in the disaster relief for the area (as well as a huge stretch of Japanese Self Defense Force camps spread out on the campus grounds.)

今日、私たちは石巻市の主要な協力センターである石巻災害ボランティアセンターに行きました。このセンターは、石巻専修大学に開設されました。この写真でわかるように、救援活動で少しでも進歩をもたらすことを望んでここに来たボランティアの人達のテントはわずかですが、自衛隊の宿営は、キャンパス内にずっと広がっています。

We met some of the sweetest staff ever, and we were able to start immediately going around to all the rooms to play our music for the people there.

とても優しいスタッフの人たちと出会い、すぐに、部屋から部屋へと訪問して、そこにいる人たちに歌を歌うことができました。

We dropped off some clothes. The man holding the vest was coordinating the business of the evacuation center the day that we visited, and as we were about to leave we asked for his namecard. He was very sorry and said he didn't have one to give us. "I also don't have an address anymore because of this disaster..."

衣服を届けました。ベストを持っている方は、私たちが訪問した日に、コーディネイトの仕事をしていました。そこを去る時に、名刺を尋ねたのですが、彼は「私もこの災害で住所がなくなったんだ・・・」と言って、名刺がないことを残念がっておられました。

There weren't many children, but the older people were so happy and lively, it was a huge treat to be able to meet them and talk with them.

子供達はあまりたくさんいませんでしたが、年配の方たちはとてもハッピーで、元気いっぱいでした。皆さんと会ってお話しできたことは、私たちにとってとても特別な事でした。

One woman who had lost everything in the tsunami, told us, "When I went back to my house, and saw that it was a pile of rubble, I had no reaction. I didn't know how to feel; I just stood there and stared at it. It's been three weeks and I haven't cried at all. Listening to you sing today, I cried for the first time."

津波ですべてをなくした女性が私たちにこう言ったのです。「家のある所に戻ったら、ただのがれきの山だった。それを見て、何も感じなかった。ただそこに突っ立って、じっと眺めていた。それから３週間がたつけれど、一度も泣かなった。でも今日あなたたちの歌を聞いて、初めて涙が流れてきたよ。」

This man could barely move, but he made an effort to stand up and show me his rose. He really wanted to show me this rose, and it was one of his most sacred possessions. I'm not sure if he got it while he was in the evacuation center or not, but he was holding it and looking at it so lovingly, and wanted me to look at it too. He said, "This pot fell down in the earthquake last night [the earthquake was a 7.3 off the coast of Miyagi]. But I picked it up and put it back in its pot, and it's still alive. It's still as beautiful as ever, and it will grow even bigger." And then he cried.

この男性は、ほとんど体を動かすことができないのですが、なんとか立って、私にバラの花を見せてくれました。本当に私に見せたかったのです。それは彼にとって一番大切な持ち物でした。それを避難所でもらったのかどうかわかりませんが、大事に持って、それを愛情こめて眺めていたのです。そして私にも見てほしかったのです。彼は、「この鉢はね、夕べの地震（宮城県の沖で震度６強）で落ちたんだが、またひろって、もとに戻してやったら、まだ生きている。そしてもっときれいになってるし、大きくなっているんだよ。」　そう言い終えると彼は泣きました。

Most of the electricity was cut because of the earthquake the night before.

昨晩の地震のために、ほとんど停電していました。

There was another huge rush on the convenience stores. The shelves were completely empty, and signs like this were everywhere.

コンビニにたくさんの人が殺到しました。そして棚は完全にからっぽになりました。このようなサインはどこにでも見受けられます。

On the way back we had a look at some of the devastation along the Ishinomaki coast.

町を出る途中、石巻市の海岸の荒廃を見ました。

It was a strangely different effect than Kesennuma or Minamisanriku, both of which were port inlets that tapered to a point, where the wave entered and just plowed through everything across a wide space. In Ishinomaki, the tsunami hit straight across a longer stretch of coast, but didn't seem to make it so far or so forcefully inland. Still, in some ways, while the houses weren't as completely desecrated, and from far away looked like they might still be standing, they were just skeletons of broken walls and windows.

気仙沼市や南三陸町は入江になった港町で中に入りくんでいます。そしてそこでは波はすべてを乗り越えて広範囲まで流れ込んで来ました。それと比べると、石巻市では、津波はただ長い海岸沿いに達しましたが、あまり内陸の方には入ってきませんでした。家は完全に奪われなかったものの、そして遠くから見ると、まだ建物が立っているように見えるのですが、よく見てみると壊れた壁や窓が残っている骨組みだけが残っているという状態でした。

Earthquake!

We just had a shindo 6 (magnitude 7.4) earthquake in Sendai. It started pretty abrupt and pretty hard and after a second of hesitation the four of us who were downstairs preparing for tomorrow ran outside to the street and held onto whatever we could find. The telephone wires and everything was moving and shaking--not sure how much I can accredit to actual reality as much as the very very scary beating of my own heart.

Definitely a hefty reminder of how important it is for us all to bond together during this time. Any one of us could be in an earthquake at any time--trapped under our own house or facing the loss of our loved ones. This earthquake just reminded me how close we all are--how lucky we all are to be alive.

Anyway, we're okay. We're off to Ishinomaki tomorrow.

One woman in an evacuation center that we visited in Kesennuma was interested in talking to us after the show. Horii-san talked to her and related to me what she said.

She said, initially she was so relieved and happy to be alive, after escaping the tsunami. But after a little while of living in the evacuation center, and wearing cast-off clothes and being grateful for whatever amenities she was given, she started thinking, "Wow, I had much-nicer clothes back home. I had so much stuff!" And she started to realize that she really did have a lot of things--what she now knows was too much--and she could've been helping others and sharing it with others. She used to live in a house where everyone had their own television, because they "needed" to watch different TV shows. But now, she realizes that she didn't really need what she had thought she needed.

She said, "I think this disaster was God's way of giving Japan a reset."

気仙沼避難所で会った一人の女性は、ショーの後、興味をもって話しかけてくれました。彼女と話をした後、堀井さんが彼女の言った内容を私におしえてくれました。

彼女は最初、津波から救われてほっとし、生きていることをとてもうれしく思ったのですが、避難所で、人の古着を着、何でも自分が受け取る日常必需品をありがたく思って生活していると、「ああ、前は家でずっといい服を着ていたんだわ。そしてとてもたくさんの物をもっていたんだ。」と思い始めたそうです。そして自分が実際にどれだけたくさんの物をもっていたのか、わかりはじめたのだそうです。自分が物を持ち過ぎていたこと、そして他の人を助けることできたこと、他の人に物を分け合うことができたのにと思ったそうです。好きな番組を見られるように、家族一人一人が自分のテレビをもっていた家に住んでいましたが、自分が必要だと思った物は、本当はあまり必要ではなかったんだと今、わかったと話してくれました。また「この災害は、日本をリセットするための神の方法だと思う。」と彼女は言ったのです。

These are pictures from this extremely hi-tech CoolPix camera that I borrowed for this trip. I'm glad I have it, but please don't mind the quality of these pictures.

I guess you had to be there.

We turned onto this road which turned out to be a long haul through barely-cleared roads with piles of houses and cars in tiny pieces as far as the eye can see.

This massive ship was washed up onto the road by the port.

Along the banks of the rivers were devastation as well.

Some houses were standing relatively undamaged between houses that were reduced to rubble.

Visiting K-wave Taiikukan in Kesennuma, Miyagi

Today we went to the K-wave sports center in Kesennuma, which is now a buzzing beehive of an evacuation center on the top of a beautiful hill. Above is one of the courts covered in people and their cots and belongings (dimly lit to conserve electricity).

The girl in the glasses in the above photo was one of the first people who greeted us as we set up. We're not sure if it was our "Disaster volunteer" arm bands, or Gene's handsome face, but she was so friendly and kept coming back to share her snacks with us.

We were able to drop off 12 boxes of toilet paper, and blankets that were donated to Yuki and Isamu (http://helpeastjapan.wordpress.com) for the disaster victims.

We were minus our 2 professional clown companions, so we braved the balloon-making on our own!!!

The evacuees were extremely friendly, and seemed to enjoy our songs. We stayed for a long time and talked to the ones who hung around after our show.

One woman was rifling around inside her bag during our entire show. When we were done, she called me over to tell me that she really wanted to give me something, but she didn't have much. She gave me a small purse, and opened it to show me that there was a 5 yen coin inside. 「御縁がありますように。」

Many of the people told us to 「がんばってください!」 I started rushing to say it first.

Gene was the hit with the kids. He couldn't refuse them when they kept asking for more and more balloons.

We had an extremely animated audience, who were so much fun to perform for. They sang along to 「涙そうそう」 and cried when we sang 「世界を変えよ」.

Visiting Emergency Evacuation Centers in Aizu, Fukushima

April 3rd - 5th

On the 3rd, the four of us with a van-load of ALL kinds of stuff, arrived at our friends'--theTadaura Family--house in Aizu, Fukushima prefecture. We met up with our friends, the Matsuoka family (http://inorinotomo.com) from Nasu, and Isamu Matsuoka and Yuki Kubota (http://helpeastjapan.wordpress.com) from Kashiwa, who are also up in Fukushima to visit the emergency evacuation centers.

Our three vehicles loaded with people and stuff to (hopefully) give away, we left at 8:30 and managed to hit up 4 different Evacuation Sites (避難所) before 4 PM.

It was a lot of fun, but not a little exhausting. We were happy to get our feet wet and figure out what is just the beginning of what we hope to be able to do for these disaster victims.

Altogether on the 4th and the 5th we were able to visit 6 evacuation sites. The 会津美里町おやめ荘ふれあいセンター, 高田体育館, 新鶴体育館, 会津美里町農業村環境改善センター, 赤沢小学校, and 赤沢幼稚園. At some of these sites we were able to unload bananas, and at all of them we presented a clown and magic show (Isamu and Yuki) and mini-live by Gene and Florence. We also left each of the children with stuffed animals (donated to Family InternationalShizuoka) and balloons.

At 赤沢小学校 we were invited in by the staff to eat the lunch that we brought. They served us coffee and we got to partake of a yakisoba takidashi (焼きそば炊き出し) that a team of cooks from Okayama prefecture came to serve to the evacuees. As we sat in the corner of their office, we found out from the ladies that they themselves, whom I had thought were volunteers or government coordinators, were also evacuees from Narahamachi, running the evacuation center! 感動しました。They said that they'd rather be working to manage the center than sittingaround doing nothing. They were so friendly and professional and helpful that I wouldn't have thought they had just lost everything that they own. (Narahamachi is one of the cities about 2km away from the 2nd Fukushima nuclear reactor. According to some of the people that I talked to, they evacuated immediately after the earthquake, taking nothing with them, and haven't been able to go back to their houses since. We asked the woman in charge of the 赤沢幼稚園 evacuation center when she thought she'd be able to go back to her house, and her answer was, "Maybe my grandchildren will be able to go back. But maybe I'll be able to go back tomorrow--we must have hope.")

We had brand new dolls to pass out as a bit of an "encouragement gift" after our show, and mostly children came forward to receive them. One woman came up to me and asked me for a "cow doll." It seemed like a strange request, but I gave her one. Then she explained to me that her family had a cow farm in Narahamachi, and had worked for years to expand their number of cows. When they evacuated from the earthquake, they had to leave nearly 30 cows behind. They hadn't seen their cows in over 3 weeks and knew they would probably never see them again. I told her she could take 30 dolls, and she said I was a funny foreigner.

This boy was extremely excited after our show. He followed us around everywhere and told me about 10 times that I was "beautiful". (「お姉さんキレイですね。」)

Gene and I sang mostly famous Japanese folk songs like 「花」　「涙そうそう」　「島歌」 and 「なごり雪」. We felt it like it was appropriate to honor the country and sing songs that everyone could sing along to. We were a little nervous about the kids, because we didn't plan a program geared toward them, but they were very polite and seemed interested in the songs that we sang. Maybe because they don't have television or much else to do, we were able to hold their interest for longer.

One very friendly ojisan chatted up Gene and I after our show and was talking very animatedly about the oldies songs that he likes and how he likes singing at karaoke, etc. When I asked him where he lived, he said 「わかんないなぁ。俺の家は津波でやられたんだ。」 I didn't really know if I was supposed to say 「残念ですね・・・」 or 「なるほど・・・」

This evening we arrived in Sendai, and brought some bananas, food, and fuel for our friends here. We're making plans to go to Kesennuma （気仙沼）tomorrow, so please pray for us!!!

Please also pray for encouragement and strength for the evacuees, some of whom have been working non-stop in order to forget about the pain of their loss. I have a new and amazing respect for these people who seem to be even more polite, kind, cheerful, and all-around JAPANESE in these, the worst of circumstances.

Hi guys!!

I know you all will support our very small attempt to do something about this situation in the tsunami-affected areas. There are so many great people doing stuff already, we want to see how we can go lend a hand and what we can get our friends back home to help with. Since we were basically just sitting at home itching to help, we're pretty thrilled to be able to go up and jump right in.

On the first trip, Gene and I will be going with my dad and Nobuka Horii, certified disaster coordinators from Shizuoka prefecture. We get to ride on their coat-tails and work with them to distribute stuff that we've sent ahead: fruit, toilet paper, and toys for kids, etc. Gene and I will be taking our expert balloon-making services, and hopefully we'll be able to sing some Japanese folk songs to encourage people (which is probably the thing we're better at). The main purpose of this trip is to figure out what we can do, and how we can help better the second time we go up--what we can bring, whether more people are needed, etc.

We'll leave to catch up with the Shizuoka team in a few hours, so wish us luck. I promise to update you every time I encounter an internet connection!!!

"Even though we cannot imagine what they must be going through, our prayers and our earnest efforts are with our friends who have been affected by this tragedy. As we have come to know them throughout our trips, and have made personal friends in each of these cities, we feel more strongly that it is our life's calling to do our best to bring whatever hope and encouragement we can with our music."
